February 23—24, 2018

“There exists a truer identity for Appalachia beyond its mythology in the American imagination.”
-Jeff Biggers, The United States of Appalachia (2006)

The West Virginia Law Review invites you to attend its upcoming “Appalachian Justice Symposium.” The Symposium will take place on February 23 & 24, 2018, at the West Virginia University College of Law in Morgantown, West Virginia. Law Review editors have selected essays for publication in a special Symposium issue of the West Virginia Law Review entitled “Essays on Appalachia.” The purpose of the conference is to bring together people from various disciplines to have a serious conversation about the legal and public policy issues faced by Appalachia and to collaborate to develop innovative solutions to those challenges in keeping with what Jeff Biggers describes as “Appalachia’s best-kept secret”:

Far from being a “strange land with peculiar people,” the mountains and hills have been a stage for some of the most quintessential and daring American experiences of innovation, rebellion, and social change.

The  Law Review has selected papers and panel presentations regarding a variety of policy areas, from veterans’ issues and entrepreneurship to substance abuse, criminal law, health care, and more. Symposium attendees are responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses.
